What is SMP?

The look of hair, without surgery

Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is a cosmetic tattoo treatment for hair loss. Thousands of tiny pigment dots are placed in the scalp with a fine needle to replicate the look of real hair follicles.

Done well, it gives you a sharp, freshly shaved look with a defined hairline, makes thin areas look fuller, and helps scars blend into the hair around them. Every treatment is matched to your skin tone, your natural hair colour and the hairline that suits your face.

Who SMP is for

Man looking down, showing a bald crown and a receded hairline

Receded and bald on top

Your hairline has receded and you’re left with a horseshoe pattern: bald on top, with hair around the sides and back. You’re after a clean shaved look with a natural stubble effect.

Pigment recreates the look of a fresh buzz cut across your whole scalp, finished with a new hairline designed to suit your face and age.

Thinning on top or at the crown

You still have hair, but it’s thinning and your scalp is starting to show through. You want it to look fuller while keeping your length.

Treatment · Hair thickening

Pigment is placed between your existing hairs to reduce the contrast with your scalp, so thinning areas look noticeably fuller.

A scar on the scalp

A hair transplant, an injury or surgery has left a scar that shows when your hair is cut short. You want it blended in with your hair so it’s less noticeable.

Pigment is layered into and around the scar to match the colour and density of your surrounding hair, so it blends in and becomes far less noticeable. Each scar is assessed at your consultation and the treatment is tailored to it.

Man with a short beard that has patchy gaps on the cheek and chin

A patchy beard

Your beard grows in thin or patchy, with gaps on the cheeks or chin that won’t fill in. You want a fuller, even beard or a defined line-up.

Pigment fills the gaps and sharpens your beard line, so your beard looks even and full from every angle.

SMP specialist

After more than 10 years as a barber, I’ve seen firsthand how much a great haircut can change the way a man looks and feels. I’ve also seen its limitations. As hair loss progresses, there’s only so much a haircut can conceal—and for many men, that can take a real toll on their confidence.

I wanted to offer men dealing with male pattern baldness a solution that went beyond the barber’s chair. That search led me to scalp micropigmentation (SMP) and, ultimately, to creating Sydney Scalp Lab.

SMP creates the appearance of natural hair follicles, helping restore receding hairlines, fill in areas of baldness and make thinning hair look fuller. It offers an immediate visual improvement, with the result gradually refined over a series of sessions. Each treatment is tailored to complement your features and your age, for a natural, subtle finish.

My experience as a barber has taught me the importance of detail, balance and a hairline that suits the individual. Through SMP, my goal is to help men feel comfortable in their appearance and confident in themselves again.

FAQs

Will people be able to tell?

Not when it’s done properly. A natural result comes from the hairline design, the size and spacing of each dot, and the right pigment shade. Reading those details is where a decade in the hair industry pays off.

Does SMP hurt?

Most people describe it as mild discomfort rather than real pain. Everyone’s sensitivity is different, and you can take a break whenever you need one.

How many SMP sessions will I need?

Usually two to four sessions, spaced one to two weeks apart so the pigment can settle in between. You’ll get an exact number for your scalp at your consultation.

What will it cost me?

It depends on the area, the look you’re after and how many sessions you need. Send a few photos on WhatsApp and you’ll get a tailored quote with no obligation.

Is SMP permanent?

SMP lasts for years, though the pigment slowly softens over time. Most people come back for an occasional top-up to keep it sharp.

Will I have to keep my head shaved?

Only for the shaved look, which works best kept short. Hair thickening is designed for men who want to keep their length.

Can it hide a hair transplant scar?

Yes. SMP is one of the most effective ways to camouflage a hair transplant scar. Pigment is placed into and around the scar to match your surrounding hair, so it blends in and becomes far less noticeable. Your scar is assessed at your consultation so the treatment is planned around it.
